Be Smooth: Face Freezing (often referred to as ‘Botox’) and Fine Line Reduction

What are facial injections and specifically what is the product called Botox?

BOTOX is a prescription medicine that is injected into muscles and is used to improve the look of moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows (glabellar lines) in people 18 to 65 years of age for a short period of time.

BOTOX is administered by a healthcare professional as a simple, nonsurgical treatment that is injected directly into the muscles between the brows. It works by blocking nerve impulses to the injected muscles. This reduces muscle activity that causes moderate to severe lines to form between the brows. Individual results may vary.

Does it hurt?

When your forehead is injected the worst it will feel like is a scratch or an ice cream headache.

Will you be able to tell I’ve had it?

Sometimes your forehead will be slightly marked for an hour but generally people leave and go about their day. Make up can be applied right away to conceal any marks.

Why can only prescribers give you facial injections such as Botox?

Firstly, Botox® is a prescription only drug and only fully qualified Botox® doctors and nurses will prescribe and carry out your treatment. You will be treated with genuine FDA approved Botox® which is why you can expect the best results that last longer.

Botox® injections are non-invasive and most often used to smooth away forehead wrinkles, crow’s feet and laughter lines to give your skin a fresher, more youthful appearance. The effects can last up to 3 to 4 months.

Are all injectable products called Botox? You say ‘commonly referred to’ isn’t it Botox that you use?

Some back street suppliers say they are using Botox. Botox, however is a trade name specifically owned by a company trading as Allergan. Other products include Azallure and Bo Couture. Saying you are using Botox when you’re not is like calling a cheap vacuum cleaner a ‘Hoover’ or a ‘Dyson’. The results will not be the same. Results last 3-5 months.

The muscle relaxant Botox® is an anti-ageing treatment commonly used to help smooth the appearance of lines and wrinkles. Laughing, smiling, frowning and lifestyle factors all contribute to the development of facial lines and wrinkles.

After my treatment can I drink?

All we ask is that you have no alcohol on treatment day, avoid tilting your head forwards for a few hours afterwards and do not exercise for 24 hours. If you’ve any temporary discomfort, just take ordinary painkillers.

How does Botox work?

Botox® works by blocking the nerve impulses to the muscles. The muscles then relax and can’t contract and, in turn lines and wrinkles relax too and begin to soften giving you a younger looking complexion.

Botox is a prescription medicine that is injected into muscles and used to improve the look of the “11s,” the moderate-to-severe frown lines between the eyebrows (glabellar lines). It works by blocking nerve impulses to the injected muscles. This reduces muscle activity that causes moderate to severe lines to form between the brows.

Why do we get fine lines?

Over time, your face will naturally start to develop fine lines and wrinkles as collagen and elastin break down. These fibres help support the skin structures which in turn help to maintain a smooth looking complexion. When the collagen and elastin fibres break down, skin loses its strength and elasticity and lines and wrinkles begin to appear.

Over exposure to sun on holidays, smoking, city living with high pollution, squinting at monitors and mobile phone screens – all these factors can take their toll on your skin. The stress of a busy life can accelerate the ageing process leaving your skin with tired lines and wrinkles. Most people first notice fine lines and wrinkles around their eyes and mouth

How quickly does it work?

Within days, you may see a marked improvement in the moderate-to-severe frown lines between your brows. Lines continue to improve for up to 30 days, and results can last for up to 4 months. Individual results may vary.

How long does it last?

Visible results have been shown to last up to 4 months. Your own results may vary – be sure to talk to Lee Walker’s team about what you can expect and when to schedule your next appointment.

Does it hurt?

Discomfort is usually minimal and brief. The entire procedure takes approximately 10 minutes. Most patients are in and out of the physician’s office without downtime following Botox.

Side effects associated with the injection include localized pain, infection, inflammation, tenderness, swelling, redness, and/or bleeding/bruising.

Will I still be able to move my face?

Although the results are visible, a treatment with Botox will not radically change your facial appearance or make you look as if you’ve “had work done.” The muscle activity that causes frown lines between the brows is temporarily reduced, so you can still frown or look surprised without the wrinkles and creases between your brows.

All treatments are individualized to the patient’s needs and goals.

Be Stung: Pouting Perfectly

Why do people get their lips injected?

Ageing naturally causes your lips to become thinner and lose definition. Where you’re likely to notice it most is around ‘Cupid’s Bow’ – the V-shaped area of your upper lip. You may have used make-up to disguise things, but it can bleed down the vertical wrinkles and actually highlight the problem.

What’s so good about getting your lips done?

Lip fillers can be used to give you youthful looking, plump lips. People of all ages with naturally thin or thinning lips can benefit from lip enhancement treatment.

  • A more defined smile
  • Enhance your pout
  • Can help turn the corners of the mouth upwards
  • Give lips a more youthful looking appearance

Does it hurt?

Lips are sensitive, therefore a local anaesthetic is first applied to the lips to ensure the area is numb. Lip fillers are then very carefully injected into the area required to give you more natural fuller lips.

How long does it take to get your lips done?

The whole lip enhancement procedure should take as little as 30 minutes. To discuss how you can achieve fuller lips with more definition Dr Walker’s team will show you their gallery of before and afters to help inform your choice.

How quickly does it work?

The results of lip enhancement treatment are immediate and should last up to 6 months. To maintain volume and definition, you may need a top-up. After any initial swelling and possible bruising subsides, you should be left with beautifully full and plump looking lips.

Be Smooth: Inside Dermal Fillers

What are dermal fillers?

We use a range of approved, premium dermal fillers are used by qualified and trained practitioner as an effective treatment for deep lines and wrinkles. They can help reduce deep lines and wrinkles, fill hollows and smooth the contours of your face. Anti-ageing facial fillers are the non-surgical way to achieve younger looking skin and provide volume for tired lines and wrinkles.

As your skin ages, it loses the collagen that helps shape and support it. Natural lines and wrinkles deepen. Sun exposure, smoking, air pollution and even stress can all age your appearance. The face can also begin to lose volume giving sunken cheeks and a ‘dragged down’ appearance.

How do they work?

We use a range of premium dermal fillers products that can help you achieve the desired result. It will depend on the area being treated as to which product our qualified practitioners would recommend as the most suitable.

Facial fillers can plump up your skin, smooth wrinkles and fill out deep lines by replacing the collagen lost due to natural ageing or skin damage.

Premium dermal fillers are injected in small controlled doses just under the surface of skin of the area to be treated. This fills out the sunken areas and lines to give a smoother, firmer and more refreshed appearance. Depending on the type of dermal filler used, results can last from 6 to 24 months.

What is it really?

Small amounts of dermal filler are injected directly into the skin using an ultrafine needle. After cleansing the area to be treated, a numbing cream will be applied. This ensures the injections administered by the qualified doctor or nurse will only cause minor discomfort.

The gel administered helps to plump up the skin to smooth out lines and wrinkles. If the lips or facial contours are being treated, the filler adds volume, restores shape and gives a fuller, fresher appearance.

Dermal filler treatments are only carried out by fully qualified doctors and nurses wherever the Walker clinic is taking place.

What happens after the treatment?

Afterwards, there might be a small amount of swelling which will quickly subside. Depending on the area treated, it usually takes no longer than 30 minutes and you can leave the clinic as soon as you are ready to do so.

Minimal recovery time is required after dermal filler treatment and you can return to normal activities straight away. You may experience some slight swelling or bruising to the area being injected and typically doesn’t last longer than 48 hours. Your aesthetician will discuss your recovery and what to expect when you attend your appointment.

How much difference will it make?

Facial fillers plump up your skin, smooth wrinkles and fill out deep lines by replacing the volume lost due to natural ageing or skin damage. They’re also used to add volume to cheeks and lips and you’ll experience a fuller, more supple appearance in the areas treated.

Be Dry: Hyperhidrosis (Under Arm Injections)

I’ve heard Botox can be used to stop sweating?

This is called hyperhidrosis.

Botox® can also be used as an effective treatment for excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) in areas such as the armpits or hands. It can be injected into sweat glands to block nerve impulses that cause your body to sweat without affecting other nerve functions.

Be Bright: Facial Peels

How do I understand chemical facial peels?

Over the years, your skin can gradually appear dull and lifeless. This can be caused by dead skin cells that accumulate and clog up your skin.

Chemical facial peels aim to remove the dead skin cells from the skins surface to allow new healthy skin cells to grow back creating smoother looking skin. They can also be used to treat blemishes, scars and help reduce the signs of ageing.

Our specially trained aestheticians, practitioners will discuss the most suitable peel to achieve the results you want as part of your personalised treatment plan.

Benefits of facial peels

  • An accelerated form of exfoliation to revitalise skin tone and improve texture
  • Can be used to rejuvenate skin around the eyes and mouth and on the face, neck, hands, forearms and chest
  • Can help to reduce acne scarring, reverse skin damage, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, remove hyper-pigmentation, liver pots and other signs of ageings

Results of chemical facial peels:

Chemical peel treatment removes the layers of dead skin to reveal fresher looking, brighter and rejuvenated skin. Milder ‘superficial’ skin peels can be used as an extension of your beauty regime and repeated at certain intervals.

What is the downtime for a chemical peel?

The whole process usually takes around 30 minutes.

Some chemical peels are single treatments and involve no downtime. Others require a course of treatments with a 7 to 10 day recovery period and the use of sunblock as your skin can be quite sensitive. After any chemical peel you are free to leave the clinic as soon as you feel comfortable to do so.

Be Handy: Hand Rejuvenation

As we age, skin on the hands can lose fat, becoming thin and bony, with prominent veins. Age spots, fine lines and wrinkles change the look and feel of the hands. Overall, hand rejuvenation needs to address two key aspects: volume rejuvenation and skin rejuvenation. A variety of techniques exist for bringing volume and freshness to the hands, erasing the telltale signs of ageing.

Hand rejuvenation with dermal fillers is growing in popularity because it can give the hands a fresher and more youthful appearance by volumising the skin, minimising wrinkles, and hiding prominent veins. Fillers containing dermal stimulants go a step further encouraging the production of collagen in the skin, leading to increased volume and prolonged treatment effectiveness.

Compared to other hand rejuvenation alternatives such as autologous fat injections, dermal fillers have proven easy to use with few complications. Cosmetically, both patients and doctors express satisfaction with this treatment method.

The injections are made between the spaces of the fingers; usually between the second and third fingers, and the third and fourth fingers. They are usually made after an injection of a local anaesthetic such as lidocaine.

Radio Frequency (Kate Dyment)

How does the Radio Frequency treatment work?

The radio frequency energy is directed onto the skin through optical gel which is applied before treatment. The radio frequency energy works by heating the dermal (ie lower) layers of your skin without having to pass directly through the epidermis (the surface skin) so that skin is maximally protected. The heat energy being delivered to the lower layers is absorbed by the many water molecules present in this area. The water molecules then begin to vibrate from the energy delivered causing additional frictional heat.

The neurotransmitters to the brain interpret this delivery of heat to the lower layers of the skin as being a perceived threat/potential injury and the body responds to this by stimulating collagen with the further benefit of tightening elastin fibres. This is the body's natural reparative response and how it would deal with wound healing. The result is tighter, firmer, younger looking skin. There is also a freshness and youthfulness that results from the treatment due to the excitation of the water molecules which produces high levels of oxygenation (water being made up of part hydrogen and part oxygen). Oxygen stimulation below the skin surface promotes general skin health (assisting with acne and other scarring) in addition to the lifting and tightening that the technology is most well known for.

Who can have treatment?

Radio frequency is a safe non-invasive treatment and can be used on all skin types. It is very popular with clients - male and female, over the age of 35, as it is excellent at restoring elasticity, smoothing out lines and wrinkles and bringing about a more youthful looking complexion. As mentioned It is also used to help with acne scarring. So clients range in age from people in their 20's to those in their 80's! Men and women, and all skin colours.

What results can I expect and when?

Obviously results will vary depending on skin laxity and condition, which is usually dependent on age and lifetyle. Advice wil be given at your consultation as to what sort of results you can expect and some before and after examples will be shown to you, using the equipment that you will be treated with.

Many clients see a noticeable result even after one treatment and there is a cumulative effect as time passes. Results are often noticed by family and friends after a few treatments. The results are, and look, completely natural; and the treatments provide genuine long lasting effects at a cellular level - not just superficial muscle tightening. Skin looks smoother, fresher, firmer, and more lifted. Skin condition improves and a general healthy more vibrant appearance results - bringing llife back to sallow and dull complexions as well as eradicating lines and wrinkles. We recommend before and after photos are taken throughout your course, so that you can see the improvements.

What areas can be treated most effectively with Radio Frequency?

Best results are usually seen on the face, neck and decolletage. It is good for loose jaw lines, nasal labial folds (those lines from nose to mouth), lines and wrinkles around the eyes and on the forehead, under eye bags and circles, and generally skin that has aged chronilogically and through exposure to damaging environmental elements such as the sun, smoking, wind in the winter months, alcohol and poor hydration over the years.

How does the treatment feel?

The treatment feels pleasantly warm and comfortable. It is a heat based treatment with the heat being delivered from the inside out, using safe and comfortable technology and administered by a specifically trained therapist. The therapist will work on each area of your face (and neck/decolletage if required) one by one - to raise temperature up to the optimum level for collagen stimulation and results. An infra red temperature aid will enable this to be monitored. You can relax and enjoy it!

How many treatments will I need?

We usually recommend a course of 7 - 8 treatments but this does depend on age and skin condition/laxity. Thereafter occasional maintenance treatments are advised. Your therapist will provide a free consultation and suggest how many treatments are recommended in your circumstances. Sometimes clients elect to have one off treatments for a special event. But for long lasting results (up to 2 years depending on age and lifestyle) a course will be needed. For older clients (60 years and above), for maximum results a second course could be required after the first.

There is no limit to the amount of treatments you can have, and the treatments come with a warning... you may get addicted to the new you and the compliments that are often received!

How long do I have to wait in between treatments?

Treatments can be taken as regularly as twice a week, but most people have treatments every week or every two weeks whilst they are on their course. If your budget doesn't allow for this you can take treatments monthly. The results will just take a little longer to come through. After the initial course you can take a break and then either book in for another course 3 months later (for older clients or clients with more compromised skin) or you can have occasional maintenance treatments. Don't forget that as time goes by you are continuing to age and are regularly exposed to environmental hazards which will take their toll and perpetuate the ageing process. These treatments are combating that, but will not last for ever as you are always aging, so arrange a review session with your therapist once you have completed a course.

What do I need to do in between treatments?

Before treatments you must drink plenty of water so that you get the most out of your treatments. The more water molecules in the skin the easier it is for the skin to heat up and prompt the reparative response of collagen stimulation and oxygen production. Otherwise just turn up with or without make up. Your therapist can remove make up and you will be able to reapply after treatment.

What will happen after the treatment?

After the treatment there will be a more flushed look to the skin. For those with a sallow skin tone this will usually generate a very healthy appearance. For those with initial red skin tones there may be a higher than usual skin colour but this will generally subside quickly (within an hour or two usually). The skin will feel warm but this will cool after a relatively short period. You will feel a tautness and probably notice an improvement in texture and a more lifted look to the skin. Make up can be applied immediately and you can carry on with your day as usual, confident that you are on the path to a naturally younger looking you! Any other questions of course can be answered in a free consultation.
